HOW CAN I BECOME PART OF SHARP TRAINING?
For individuals who are still in the Public-school system; a referral from that school and a request for a PPT should be sent to our office located at 78 Howard St. Suite C New London, CT. If you are connected to the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) in the State of Connecticut or the Bureau of Rehabilitative Services (BRS); a call from your case manager to our main office at 860-447-3511 requesting a meeting to determine interest and space availability.
WHAT TYPE OF SERVICES DO YOU OFFER?
In addition to the vocational training services we are also capable of providing
Day supported Option (DSO) this is a non-working non-paid option that has little structure but lots of staff support for fun activities like Crafts; Music; Reading; Games and supervised outings in the community
In Home Support (IHS) would allow a staff to come to the home and instruct/ assist with basic independent living skills like cooking; cleaning; personal grooming; laundry; banking; and money awareness. Any skill that would be necessary to live without daily assistance.
Personal Supports (PS) would be an extension of IHS but could also be expanded to outside of the home. For example: Doctor’s visits; movies; shopping or any kind of social event in the community
Individual day Supports Vocational (IDV) would allow a staff to work along side a client to assist with looking for a job in the community; writing a resume; filling out job applications or any activity that would assist in becoming employed
Individual day Supports Non-Vocational (IDNV) is in close relation to the above Personal Supports but can include more community activity such as volunteering; developing friendships of choice; expanding independent living skills such as learning to use public transportation
Individual Supported Employment (ISE) This category is specific to work and is a one to one relationship. There would be only one Job coach and only one client and they would work together to complete the tasks required of the employee.
CAN YOU SUPPORT ALL LEVELS OF DISABILITIES?
Yes, we can. Currently, we do not have a handicap-accessible van, but we have several site locations that have a wide range of accessibility and levels of skills needed by participants.
IS THERE AN AGE REQUIREMENT TO BE PART OF SHARP TRAINING?Yes, according to the State of Connecticut Labor laws you must be 15 with parental consent or 16 years old to participate in our work programs but there is no restriction on those who are interested in our Day services locations or there other independent living categories.
CAN SHARP TRAINING PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION?
Yes, we can provide transportation to and from all group supported categories for all those clients who are independently mobile or who require limited assistance getting in and out of vehicles.
WHAT AREAS IN CT DOES SHARP TRAINING COVER?
As represented in the list of towns we currently service above, Sharp Training clients are spread all along the eastern part of Connecticut. From Branford to Pawcatuck and Sterling to Stonington.
WILL I GET PAID?
Yes, all individuals earn an hourly wage based on skill and ability and receive a paycheck from Sharp Training unless they are directly hired on by a work site.
